  (One Branch Of Spring Flowers)

  The sweet red lotus flower is gone,

  And Autumn cools my green reed mats!

  Slowly I doff my silken dress;

  I enter alone my little boat。

  Who from the cloud sends down to me

  That letter scribed on silk?

  The geese write across the sky

  The symbol of the geese again;

  Full moonlight fills my western room。

  Apart the flowers fall,

  Apart the waters flow away。

  Love is but one and yet it mourns,

  Being parted,in two separate places。

  I have no power to shed my hurt;

  Grief goes from my drawn brows

  But pierces straightway my heart。

  no。2

  (To Drink Beneath the Shadow of the Flowers。)

  The thin mist and heavy cloud

  Make the day long and desolate;

  The precious Jai-Neo incense in the goldenlion is burnt and cold。

  Again comes the happy festival onthis ninth day of the ninth moon。

  On my jade pillow,beneath thegauzy tent,

  I feel the midnight coolness stealingin upon me。

  In the eastern garden I hold mywine cup in the evening light。

  Impalpable the fragrance that fillsmy sleeves。

  Do not say this can not break yourheart;

  I who in the west wind roll thecurtain up,

  I am thinner now than the thinyellow flowers!

  (A Boat)

  Before my mirror case of jade

  Each year I deck myself

  In courtly style with flowers abud

  Upon my brow。

  This year he is not here;

  I fear whatever message comes

  From south of the Long River。

  After we parted,hardly I drank;

  My tears for sorrow dried。

  Sadly I dream of the thick clouds of Tson;

  Beyond them he is further from me

  Than even the edge of the sky。

  no。4

  no。4

  (The Butterflys Love of Flowers)

  My tears are red with rouges;

  They wet my silken dress。

  A thousand times

  Lingering I sing

  Four verses of Yang Kuang,

  The verses of farewell。

  Folk say the hills are far

  To reach,but to my eyes

  The sky line hides them all too soon,

  Within my lonely room

  There is no sound

  But of the constant driving rain。

  My heart was sore with grief

  For him departing。

  Whether our cup of wine

  Was high or low

  I now forget。

  Ah!Let us trust our words

  To the wild geese in flight。

  Far,Oh,far as is Tung Lai,

  Its not so far

  As is Peng Lai!

  no。5

  no。5

  (The Imperial Road)

  Within my wicker bed behind the papercurtain I waken in the morn;

  The lonely desolateness I cannot tell,

  The incense smoke is gone;the censersjade is cold,

  My mood is tasteless,chill as water。

  Three times I hear the flute playingthe song

  That wakens the heart of the Spring Flower。

  How much it brings the Spring s own spirit here

  Light wind and hissing constant rain

  Quicken my tears falling in lines pf grief。

  The flute player is gone;empty the Towerof Jade。

  My heart breaks,for there is none to leanwith me

  Against the railing。I pluck a branchof Spring Flowers。

  Alus!In heaven or earth theres nonecan deliver it。

  no。6

  no。6

  (The Butterflys Love of Flowers)

  Soft wind and gentle rain

  Begin to break the cold。

  In willow eyes and flower cheeks

  I feel the wakening heart of Spring。

  But who will share with me

  Desire of wine and verse?

  Tears mar the powder left upon my face,

  And heavy are the flowers

  Of my headdress。

  Garments of golden thread

  I begin to try on;

  Careless I lie on my couch

  My phoenix hair pin breaks。

  Alone I embrace my grief,

  For no sweet dream have I。

  Through the long night

  From time to time I cut

  The lamp wicks flower

  And play with it。

  no。7

  no。7

  (To Rouge the Lips)

  Lonely is my far off room。

  One love I have but many griefs;

  I love the Spring and Spring is gone;

  The rain drips down

  And blights the flowers。

  Against the railings of my room

  On every side I lean

  But no way brings me joy。

  Oh!Where is he?

  Green tree tops meet the sky

  And shut from me the sight

  Of his returning way。

  no。8

  no。8

  (Slow Tune of“Fairy Land”)

  Oh,desolate is my courtyard!

  Once more the wind blows slanting wise

  Fine-driven rain and I must close

  My double doors。Cold food is near,

  Blessing the willow trees petting the flowers。

  The time that cherishes both willow trees and flowers

  All kinds of wretched weather come。

  When I have finished with hard rimes

  And wake from wine,I lean my head

  Against my arm。This loneliness is new。

  All the geese are passed and gone

  And all my thousand thousand thoughts

  Can never now be sent。

  For days in my tower room I feel

  The chill faint cold of Spring。The curtains dropped

  On the four sides,I do not even go

  To lean outside against the railings green。

  My very coverlets are cold;the incense

  Fragrance dies;I waken from my dream,

  How could so sad a person sleep?

  Pure dews in the pure morning fall,

  And young leaves bud on tall sterculia trees;

  They make one feel springs wandering mood

  The sun is high;The mist is vanishing。

  Oh,let me see if now the day is clear。

  no。9

  (The Thinking of the Flute Player onthe Tower of Phoenix)

  The incense in the golden lion is cold;

  Crinkled like waves my red silken cover lies

  I rise;langorous,I do not dress my hair。

  I leave my jewel-case closed and let

  The sunlight creep up the curtain hooks。

  I,idling with grief,fear to add tomy dark mood;

  And though I would say many things

  Silence keep。Of late I have grown thin,

  Yet not from wine do I grow sick

  Nor from autumnal mourning。

  All‘s past;all’s done。

  This time hes gone。

  A thousand thousand times I say

  The verses of Yang Kuang;

  I cannot keep him now。

  I know that he is in Wu Ling

  And clouds close the double towers。

  Before my own nothing but the green water

  Knows how I gaze and all day longlook sadly out。

  From now new grief isadded to the old。

  no。10

  (Waves Washing on the Sand)

  The wind of the five watches

  Beyond the curtain rises,

  And blows without a trace

  My dream away。

  I climb up to the tower

  So gayly painted,

  But who will follow me?

  Of old with my jade pin

  I stirred the incense burning

  About the seals most fair imprint。

  Dreaming of the Purple Golden Peak,

  Moistened by rain and heavy mist,

  Half awake and half asleep with wine,

  I see the river brimming

  With waters of the Spring。

  I stain my silken dress

  With tears for olden times。

  And one by one I give

  My tears unto the flying goose。

  no。11

  (The Slow Tune)

  Seeking,searching,lonely I go,

  Forlorn and sad,grieving with hurt;

  The season grows warm,despite its chill,

  Yet hard it is to find any rest。

  How could two or three weak cups of wine

  Fight now for me against sharp evening wind?

  The geese fly by while I am in distress,

  The very birds that once I knew。

  Falling,the yellow flowers cover thr ground;

  T hey are all faded now

  And who would want to gather them?

  Alone by the window I keep my watch,

  But day seems never to grow dark。

  T he fine rain drips on the sterculia leaves

  And even with the evening never stops。

  Alas,why should this one word“sad”

  Grieve me so much?

  (Washing the Silk in the Stream)

  Above my tower hangs the skysclear blue tent;

  Below my tower the grass spreads farto meet the sky。

  Do not climb to the highest place,

  For that will make you sad。

  The shoots of young bamboo have turned

  To reeds。

  Beside my door,the blossoms fall;

  Petals and mud the building swallowstake。

  Alas,how can I bear to hear

  Again the cuckoo calling in the wood?

  Last night came wind

  And heavy rain

  And sound sweet sleep;

  Yet I was not released

  Although I drank。

  Today I question one who rolls

  The curtain shades;

  Her answer conies evasively

  As lonely as before

  The begonias bloom。

  Oh,dont you guess,

  Oh,dont you guess,

  How well I know

  When the thick leaves are green,

  When fade the blossomsred?

  (Washing Silk in the Stream)

  Down in the little yard

  Idly through my window,

  I see the depth of Spring。

  The double curtains are unrolled,

  Their shadow is dark and long。

  I lean against my tower,

  I play my lute of jade

  But I do not speak one word。

  The far peak of the hill

  Grows clear in evening light;

  Nearby the fine wind blows the rain。

  Pear blossoms start to fade;

  I fear they cannot bear that rain。

  She comes down from the swing;

  Weary,she wipes her little hands。

  Like heavy dew on lightsome flowers

  The tiny beads of sweet

  Have dampened her thin dress。

  She spies some one who comes;

  Her slippers fall;her gold pin slips;

  Shyly she runs away。

  Yet leaning on the door,she turns,

  And smiling smells

  The blue spring flowers she holds。

  Her waist is slim as tight drawn silk;

  How can she bear the yearning Spring?

  Beneath the few oer shadowing flowers

  Her evenings beauty is fresh and new。

  What can compare with her for grace

  Except a long light floating cloud?

  Singing a sweet song,her red lips move

  Each word a passionate complaint。

  Through the thick,blossomed,peach-tree path

  I long to go to her!

  In loneliness I gaze;

  I see in the clear sky

  The moon of the Jade Tower

  Lighting her homeward wheels。

  (A Pilgrimage)

  The crickets chirp among the grasses,

  From the sterculia fall the heavy leaves。

  Now in heaven and earth,sorrowis great。

  The sky‘s steps are clouded andin the moon’s ground

  Its thousand gates are shut andfastened。

  Even with a boat sailing to and from

  The starry lovers could not see eachother。

  But magpies make a bridge acrossthe river

  And once a year the lovers meet。

  The sorrow of their parting cannever be told

  The Cow-herd boy and the Spinning

  Damsel are leaving each other now。

  I fancy this,else why should it beclear

  This moment,and in another,

  Come the rain and wind。

  (Southern Peoples Song)

  The river of stars move slowly throughthe sky;

  Heavily in my chamber hangrich curtains at the door and windows。

  I feel a coolness on my pillow

  And on the thin bamboo mat beneath me;

  My tears have fallen on them。

  Futilely I ask what hour of night is it now

  And then arise to undo my silken garments。

  Without on the still waters

  The lotus leaves are scarcely seen;

  The small seed cases have newly turnedto green。

  The autumn of other years is here again

  And again I wear the dresses of last year;

  But now no more I feel its happy mood,

  Nor will its happy thoughts return。

  (The Butterflys Love of Flowers)

  The long sick night is passing by,

  Scarce can I find one happy thought。

  In vain I dream of far Chang-An

  Or know the way there in my dream。

  This year folk say the Spring is beautiful

  With flowers and moon that shine together。

  Though cups and plates are careless set,

  The wine is sweet,bitter the plums;

  They fit my double mind。

  Drinking,I put some flowers in my hair。

  O Flower,do not laugh at me,

  For like me too,the Spring is getting old。

  (Everlasting Happiness)

  The sinking sun is like to melting gold,

  The evening cloud like fitted jade。

  Oh,where are my far off friends!

  The thick mist dyes the willow trees,

  The flute plays sadly the Spring Flowers song,

  And the spirit of Spring is deeply felt。

  “The weather is mild and clear at Yuen Hsiaosgood feast,But who knows when the wind and rainwill come?”

  Folk come and call for me with costlysteeds and fragrant carriages,

  But I thank them and refuse,

  Even these friends of wine and poetry。

  In the famous days at Chung Chow,

  My life was full of lovely idleness,

  I remember how we loved the LanternFeast,

  And with jade headdress and golden girdle

  Embroidered with snow willow patterns,

  We rivaled each other for richness。

  Now am I grieving for that which is gone;

  My hair is rough as if blown by windAnd wet by mist。

  l fear to go outside tonight。

  Why not simply stay behind the curtain

  And listen to those who jest and laugh?

  (Spring in Wu Ling)

  The wind grows still;

  With flowers that fall。

  Though day is nearly done

  I have no wish to dress my hait。

  Mere things about me stay

  But men they come and go

  Till all old ways are past。

  My tears drop down

  Before I speak。

  I heard them say the Spring

  In Twin Stream is lovely still。

  I,too,in my frail boat

  Should like to drift。

  But on T win Stream I fear

  It could not bear

  My heavy weight

  Of grief。
